Week 3: Slowing down, already?

Runs/workouts:
Mon: 12WBT legs
Tuesday: 5.76k (46 minutes: 5 sets of 2 min sprints @ 10.5kmh with 2 min recovery at 5.5kmh; followed by 5 sets of 1min sprints and 1min recovery of the same) - felt really tough, without music, steady state down to 8.5kmh
Wednesday: 7.2K (12 min tempo followed by 23 minute tempo, including all the warmups - 12 mins @ 10.2kmh and then the rest at 9.0kmh - uh oh, I'm slowing down?!)
Thursday: 12WBT upper body and some core
Friday: Rest day
Saturday: 9k long run (treadmill)
Sunday: 6am session with Keith Bateman

Highlights:

  • Keith Bateman making me realise I've gone back to heel striking which is explaining a lot of the injuries and slowing down.  Will have to start again with something like C25K but I look forward to re-developing my form.
  • Sofia learning how to say "pease" (please) - gorgeous
  • Seeing Charlie spin around and play with all the toys on the playmat
  • Entering the ballot for Berlin 2015!

Week 2: Picking up the pace

Runs/workouts:
Tuesday: 5.4k (46 minutes: 6 sets of 1 min hills @ 9.5kmh @ 8.5-9.5 incline with 2 min recovery at 5.8-6kmh @ 3.0 incline; followed by 8 sets of 30s hills and 1min recovery of the same) - felt tough, but cooldown at 9.1kmh felt easier than warmup at 8.5kmh
Thursday: 6K (12 min tempo followed by 26 minute tempo, couldn't keep up 10kmh so most of the tempo at 9.5kmh)
Saturday: 8k (57minutes - felt hard outside, couldn't go faster than 6min45s)

This week, my highlights have been:
  • Doing every single workout!  Although I'm worried about my pelvis, need to see a physio to make sure that it's okay with my running
  • First playgroup at the church since the school holidays, Sofia loved being back and driving her 'car'; also park time with Sofia (although now she likes stepping into thin air from a 1.2m height which scares me!)
  • Charlie is smiling more and more, and was super well behaved for his hip ultrasound <3
  • Making a sweet potato pie with haupia and roasted crushed macadamias for a US themed lunch with Anhtai, Asma and Anne - pretty proud of the result :)

Week 1: A slow start

I'm currently doing the Michelle Bridges 12WBT 10K program (Week 9), but have not trained very well for the last two weeks with a mix of sleep deprivation and loss of mojo.  Started to get back into it over the long weekend.

Runs/workouts:
Tuesday: ~5K intervals (6 sets of 3 min sprints @ 10-11kmh with 2 min recovery at 5.5-6kmh)
Saturday: 5K park run at St Peters (31:04)
Sunday: 7.1K outdoor run (49:21)

Need to do a bit of research into food as fuel too, as I eat what I want (which I suspect is not optimal diet for this sort of thing :)

This week, my highlights have been:

  • Completing my first parkrun (that was a serious hill which I almost walked up until I saw Sofia and Charlie!), and going for my first outdoor training run which felt comfortable
  • Seeing Sofia's face cheering me on at parkrun, when she got to eat ice cream at Dolcissimo (a rare treat!), when she realised that her alphabet magnets would stick on the fridge and when she discovered Steel Park for the first time (is she secretly an Aquarius?)
  • Charlie getting through two sleep cycles one morning (YEY), and having his first almost-giggle at Gymbaroo

And so it begins

A few weeks ago, I was inspired to aim for a big goal.  I decided that I would tick off my bucket list checkbox to "run a marathon", and immediately set about looking for an interesting one to run, that would also be reasonably flat (hills and I are not friends).

London and Berlin made my shortlist.

As I have a year of maternity leave, I ended up deciding Berlin 2015 would be the most achievable if I delayed my start date at work a little bit (juggling children, just returning to work and a marathon would probably be tricky!)

So, here it is.  My goal in big bold letters.

Run a marathon in Berlin 2015.

A Facebook group I'm part of, "Running Mums Australia", inspires me on a day to day basis.  Mums out there across deserts, farms, cities are all juggling life as well as a love of running.  So, I decided this blog would be about being a running mum, not just a person setting out to do a marathon.

I will post every week, usually on a Monday, about my running, and also about what my children did that make me laugh (or cry).
